Unit 1:
Narrative Writing
Objective: Students will compose 3-4 paragraphs focused a small element of a larger event from their lives, including an introduction, body paragraphs and a conclusion.
Student Checklist of Objectives:
-I wrote the important part of an event bit-by-bit and took out unimportant parts.
-I wrote a beginning in which I showed what was happening and where, getting readers into the world of the story.
-I showed how much time went by with words and phrases.
-I wrote an ending that connected to the beginning or the middle of the story and used action, dialogue, or feeling to bring the story to a close
-I used paragraphs to separate the different parts or times of the story, or to show when a new character was speaking.
-I added to the heart of my story, including not only actions and dialogue, but also thoughts and feelings.
-I included character's thinking.
-I included precise and sometimes sensory details and used figurative language to bring my story to life.
-I used what I knew about word families and spelling rules to help me spell and edit. I used the word wall and dictionaries when needed.

Opinion Writing
Objective: Students will choose a topic and develop an opinion on the topic. From this, all students will compose 5 paragraphs in order to express their opinion on the topic and convince their reader to think the way do. students will be able to: write a lead that hooks their reader and explicitly states their opinion, three body paragraphs that state their reason clearly and support with both examples and evidence found in text or from their lives, and write a conclusion that re-states their opinion and calls the reader to action.
