These benchmarks are used to design instruction that ensures academic skills are aligned PK-4th and that assessments measure growth in these skills. All students are expected to demonstrate ‘on grade’ skills by the end of the year but many will develop skills beyond this. Teachers will use the following code to communicate information to you about your child:
E= Exceeding M = Mastered P = Progressing/Developing Appropriately
R = Requiring Support N = Not Meeting Expectations
Math Benchmarks By the end of fourth grade, the student should be able to...
-develop quick recall of multiplication facts and related division facts and fluency with whole number multiplication
- generalize place value understanding for muti-digit whole numbers
- use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic
-develop an understanding of fractions
- compare and order fractions with like and unlike denominators
- recognize and generate equivalent fractions
- change from improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa
- add and subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators
- add and subtract mixed numbers with like and unlike denominators which may or may not include renaming
-develop an understanding of decimals, including the connections between fractions and decimals
- build decimals from unit fractions
- understand decimal notation for fractions
- compare decimals and fractions
- do computation with the four operations with proper placement of decimals
-develop an understanding of Geometry
- determine perimeter and area of two-dimensional shapes
- reason with shapes and their attributes
- identify, draw, and measure lines and angles
- classify shapes by properties of their lines and angles
-represent and interpret data
By the end of fourth grade, the student should be exposed to the following math practices...
-making sense of problems and persevering in solving them
-reasoning abstractly and quantitatively
-constructing viable arguments (support solutions with evidence and reasoning)
-critiquing the reasoning of others
-modeling with mathematics
-using appropriate mathematical tools
-attending to precision
-looking for and making use of structure
-expressing regularly repeated reasoning, operations and algebraic thinking
Language Arts Benchmarks
By the end of fourth grade, the student should be able to...
-demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when speaking or writing

-analyze genres of literature
-describe main ideas and supporting details
-make predictions and inferences utilizing text details and examples
-draw conclusions
